Willis’ entrance into the distilling business was a venture of passion. Inspired by an article on Tito of Tito’s Vodka, he left his job at a tech company and focused all his energy into tequila. He found a distillery and master distiller in the town of Santiagio de Tequila. After developing the flavor profile, Willis started to get it on the market.
In late 2015, Willis brought on brand manager Dwayne Clark. Clark had a thorough background in the world of spirits, as well as insight both behind the bar and behind the scenes in the distilleries. A true believer in a grass roots approach, Clark continues to help to develop Tequila 512’s brand and works to launch it into the central Texas bar scene.
Both Willis and Clark are extraordinarily proud of their triple distilled product. The distillery itself is located at the base of a volcano and, as such, only volcano spring water is used in the product which brings a unique flavor. Additionally, there is a mango grove on the distillery’s site and the open air fermentation allows the wild yeast to pick up some stone fruit notes for the final product’s flavor profile.
The effort and meticulous attention to the creation of this unique product has certainly paid off - Tequila 512 was the double gold medal winner at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2015.
A great lover of the Texas state Capital, Tequila 512’s owner Scott Willis created his spirit as personal homage to all things Austin. Willis chose to focus on the inside as opposed to the outside of his product. Indeed, fancy packaging can never compare with the true quality of what’s inside the bottle. Crafted with the finest quality agave just outside the village of Tequila, in Jalisco, Mexico, Willis has created a refreshingly unpretentious product of great authenticity.
